January 25, 2010 Dear T-D Upper Schoolers: It’s about that time again. The first week in February is all about faith. If there ever were a time when faith was a consideration, just consider faith and Haiti. Imagine being in a Haitian prison and praying to get out, and then being in a neighboring church praying for God’s blessings. Holy Smokes! To help put the Haitian shock waves in focus upper schoolers will hear from Dr. Marie Ange, a surgeon from New Rochelle who practices at Sound Shore, and who has been a Haitian missionary for much of her adult life. I want to thank Dr. Alan Ross, whose daughter Kassie will introduce Dr. Ange to the student body, for involving T-D’s PTP in this relief effort. Dr. Marie Ange, whose last name translates into English as “angel”, will speak to the T-D parent body on Thursday night of this week at 7:00 PM in the Berns Memorial Library. Parents and students alike will be all ears once Dr. Marie Ange addresses us and pleads for help for so many children from her native home who are without schools and without walls. On Monday, February 1st T-D will visit the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City which continues to memorialize our fallen heroes in Iraq and Afganistan. That same day we’ll learn more about Scientology, which has attracted Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise and John Travolta. The Church of Scientology is near Times Square. On Tuesday T-D will visit a mosque and an Islamic school in Mount Vernon and it’s an opportunity for all of us to learn more about Islam. Later that day we’ll be at an Episcopal Church in Yonkers. It is in Getty Square and sits there as a real jewel. Bring your camera! On Wednesday we’re in Riverdale at Manhattan College and in the afternoon Gigi Wickline and Peter Soares will be speaking in their home parish – St. John’s on Yonkers Ave. Thursday, with the help of our Park Rangers, T-D will be in the City touring the African Burial Grounds at 290 Broadway, have lunch in Chinatown, visit the Transfiguration Church and St. Peter’s in lower Manhattan. Friday reintroduces Lumen Martin Winter, a distinguished American artist and second owner of 144 Overlook Circle. Winter, one of two American artists who is on exhibit at the United Nations, did work in the early 70’s in Poughkeepsie, NY. I was fortunate enough to be at the dedication of St. Mary’s Church, along with Astronaut Jim Lovell of Apollo 13. Winter designed the Apollo 13 logo and was good friends with the entire astronaut team. Monsignor Brinn of St. Mary’s will be on hand to speak about Winter, the church and his art and sculpture. The Monsignor and Winter became great friends and I can’t wait to learn more about the ‘Man of Light”. Glory Days will conclude at Mahoney’s Restaurant with Emmet Woods, the father of senior Seamus, rolling out the green carpet. Parents are invited to any one of these Glory Days activities. Hope to see some of you under God’s umbrella. Peace, Douglas E. Fleming, Jr. Headmaster Schedule below! Scroll through! Code: GLORY DAYS 2010 FEBRUARY 1 THROUGH FEBRUARY 5 GRADES 9 - 12 MON.
