POWERPOINT GUIDELINES: THE 12 LABORS OF HERCULES

GUIDELINES
1. Work in pairs or solo depending on class size and select one of the labors. Create a PowerPoint/Google Presentation that is 10-15 slides. Include a title slide, illustrations, and Source Slide. SEE ABOVE FOR YOUR ASSIGNED LABOR BASED ON CLASS DISCUSSION AND "PICK IT OUT OF A BAG" TODAY.
2. CREATE A SOURCE SLIDE: Use http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Herakles/index.html and three other SCHOLARLY sources to describe the particular Hercules labor in 3 slides. Cut and paste the 4 sources’ links to the Source Slide.
3. Describe your selected labor in 2-4 slides.
4. Illustrate your labor using one GREEK and one ROMAN sculptures, vase art, mosaics, coins etc.
5. Include the questions below as part of your presentation. NOTE: Media may differ from vase vs. stone.
6. ALL POWERPOINTS ARE NOW DUE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 IN CLASS.

7. SLIDE QUESTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: Note you may choose different media than a Greek vase or Roman sculpture. Select the strongest art work that leads to a lively and interesting PowerPoint discussion.
A) MEDIA: Describe the differences in media, pottery vs. stone.
For example:
GREEK VASE: Why do you think the Greeks chose to tell this story on a vase?
ROMAN SCULPTURE: Describe why using stone might have appeal to Roman artists.

B) VIEWER’S PERSPECTIVE: Where are you, the viewer? Too close or too far away?
C) DIFFERING VIEWS: How does the depiction of Hercules differ in each artwork? Give 3 examples.
D) POWERFUL? Do you think Hercules is shown to be weak or strong?
GREEK VASE: WEAK or STRONG? ____________________________________
Explain your choice.

ROMAN SCULPTURE: WEAK or STRONG? ____________________________________
Explain your choice.

E) MESSAGE: Each artist has a distinctive viewpoint about the depiction of Hercules labor. What message or lesson might they want to be sharing about this Hercules the hero? Use your research as a guide.
