52 nd Street : The Coolest Jazz Club/ What was “Birdland”
• Students will research,(videos and articles) the history of how 52nd st. became the jazz center of New York and identify the sounds of key i instrumentalists and singers – Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Holliday and others.
• Each students will make a listening list of 20-25 favorites from these various artists
• Each students will learn (from their personal collection) one special piece of music from an artist of their choice
• And perform as in a club setting with class members
• Students will also prepare a design for their own jazz venue and research how they will finance it, keep it promoted and book their favorite artists

MATERIALS NEEDED

FOLDER WITH TWO POCKETS OR THREE RING BINDER TO STORE HANDOUTS AND PRINTED INFO

Week 1&2 LISTENING AND RESEARCH / Print Out an online Bio for each of these great musicians
Who was George Shearing - short bio and one favorite
Who was Charlie Parker - short bio and one favorite
Who was Dizzy Gillespie - short bio and one favorite
